Paleo Diet

Updated: Aug 8, 2022

The paleo diet is a way of eating that's focused on eating foods that our ancestors would have eaten thousands of years ago. The idea is that by doing so, you'll be healthier and lose weight naturally.

What is a Paleo Diet?

The paleo diet is a lifestyle based on the idea that eating like our ancestors can improve health and prevent disease. It emphasizes consuming more fresh fruits and vegetables and whole foods, while also limiting processed foods, grains, legumes (beans), dairy products and all refined sugars. It’s also high in protein and fat, while keeping carbohydrates to a minimum.

Origins

The paleo diet is based on eating foods that were available to humans during the Paleolithic era, a time period that lasted from 2.5 million years ago to about 10,000 BC. The idea behind this approach is that our genes haven't changed much since humans lived in hunter-gatherer groups and ate what they could find in nature. Proponents of the Paleo diet argue that it's been proven by genetic research, and they consider it to be healthier than other approaches because it excludes grains and refined sugars while encouraging consumption of whole foods like fruits, vegetables, meat and fish.

Many health professionals agree with this view—that we should eat fewer processed foods—but some also criticize the Paleo diet as too restrictive. Critics point out that eliminating entire food groups such as dairy products or grains can lead to nutritional deficiencies if not done correctly (the same goes for vegan diets). In addition, some studies show that switching back to these types of ancient diets may increase risk factors for obesity or heart disease among people who aren't genetically programmed for such a restrictive way of eating.

What to eat on the paleo diet?

The paleo diet is a food plan based on the same eating habits that our hunter-gatherer ancestors had. It allows you to eat meat, fish, eggs and nuts with limited amounts of fruit and vegetables. You can also snack on seeds and oils as long as they're high in omega-3 fatty acids.

The paleo diet isn't meant for everyone because it eliminates many common foods like dairy, grains, legumes and sugar. However, if you're looking for a healthier way to eat this is a great starting point—and it may even help lower your risk for developing chronic diseases like diabetes or heart disease down the road!

What NOT to eat on the paleo diet

The Paleo diet is based on the type of foods that were available to humans during the Paleolithic era. The diet consists of grass-fed meats, vegetables, and fruits; nuts and seeds; and natural oils. It excludes grains, legumes, refined sugars and processed foods.

It's also important to avoid alcohol while following this diet since it can lead to dehydration as well as other health issues like hangovers or headaches that may interfere with your weight loss goals.

You should also avoid caffeine because it causes dehydration symptoms such as headaches or an increase in blood pressure which can have a negative effect on your body composition (the amount of fat vs muscle).

There are benefits to the paleo diet, but it has been criticized for being too restrictive and not based enough in reality.

The paleo diet is not as restrictive as it sounds. A lot of people think that you have to only eat meat and vegetables on the paleo diet, but that’s not true at all. While most paleo followers do eat meat,

they also consider fruits and vegetables part of their eating plan. The main difference between a standard American diet and a paleo-type plan is that there are more restrictions on processed food products than what you would find in other plans like Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig.

In addition to being healthy for people who want to lose weight, the Paleo Diet has been shown to help with many common health conditions including: heart disease, diabetes type 2 control and management (blood sugar), cholesterol levels control and management (cholesterol), autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus erythematosus treatment & management.

The Paleo diet is a modern-day version of the caveman diet. It’s based on what people ate before agriculture was invented, and includes foods like fruits, vegetables and fish. There are many different variations of Paleo diets out there, but they all have one thing in common: They’re free from most processed foods (which means no sugar, dairy or gluten).
